Clay Teapots

There are several types of clay teapots.  Yi-xing, pronounced "yee shing", is a town near Shanghai with a long history as the "Pottery Capital of China"  It was here during the Mind Dynasty (1368-1633 C.E.) that the world's first teapots were created.  Yixing purple clay is still used to produce its distinctive unglazed teapots, chiefly used in the gongfu style of  steeping tea.  Yixing teapots are considered the "best vessel for breing tea" by Chinese tea aficionados.  After prolonged use, the Yixing pot will develop a certain patina that retains some of the taste, scent and color of tea and that also lends the teapot itself an unusually attractive luminescent quality.
